Cold plunges may have a number of benefits, including:
-
Physical healthCold plunges may reduce muscle soreness, improve circulation, and enhance recovery after exercise. They may also reduce inflammation in muscles and joints.
-
Mental healthCold plunges may improve clarity and reduce depression or anxiety. They may also increase the production of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter that can improve mood and focus.
-
Immune systemCold plunges may boost the immune system by stimulating leukocytes, the white blood cells that help fight off sicknesses.
-
Weight lossCold plunges may aid weight loss by increasing the burning of white fat. In one study, metabolism increased 350% when participants were exposed to 14oc/57F water.
According to Harper’s BAZAAR, the latest research shows that 11 minutes a week of being fully submerged is ideal. However, you can develop your tolerance by taking a quick dip (30 seconds) or regular cold showers. If you find that cold plunging is starting to negatively impact your energy or mood, you should cut back.
